With György Deri’s illustrious career spanning over four decades and Roger Cui’s reputation as one of Queensland’s most sought-after pianists, and Principal pianist with Queensland Ballet, this is an extraordinary opportunity to see leading international musicians up-close and personal, showcasing their virtuosic talent and unique musical partnership.

Multi award-winning soloists, Roger and György have built a highly acclaimed musical partnership since 2021, and we are thrilled to be able to present this exceptional lineup of artists and repertoire for you. They will be joined by SXS Acting Co-Artistic Director and violinist, Margaret Blades, as well as emerging operatic bass Jack Bolton (Margaret Schindler Vocal Scholar recipient for 2024). This joyous program will feature:

Dr. Roger Cui

Roger is an international concert pianist, artistic executive, chamber musician, and music critic.

A former laureate of the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition (2005, 2007), Roger has been also prize winner at other piano competitions such as the Cleveland International Piano Competition (Ohio, U.S.A.), Kerikeri International Piano Competition (New Zealand), Southern Highland International Piano Competition (Sydney, Australia), and J.S. Bach International Music Competition (Berlin, Germany).

Roger holds a Master of Music from the University of Music Karlsruhe (2012, HfM Karlsruhe) in Germany, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium (2022, Brisbane). He is sponsored and represented by Yamaha Music Europe, and Kayserburg International. His chamber music partners include Jeffrey Black (Tenor, Australia), Markus Stocker (Cellist, Switzerland), Zoltan Daragó (Counter-tenor, Hungary), Marco Lima (Guitarist, Brazil), and György Déri (Cellist, Hungary).

Roger is a co-founder of the Black-Note Productions Studio (Hamburg, Germany), and has been a music critic for The Australian Music Trust. 

Since 2024, Roger is the Principal Pianist for Queensland Ballet.

György Deri

György Deri was born in Hungary in 1965 and began playing cello at the age of six. In 1983 he began studying at the famous Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He graduated with a diploma summa cum laude and, in 1991, began teaching at the Teachers’ Training Institute of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. In 2008 he became an Associate Professor there and In 2012, he completed his doctoral studies.


Over 40 years, György has given regular concerts, recorded CDs and performed on numerous radio programs. He has received many awards including the Franz Liszt Prize in 2004 and the Artisjus Award (five times) for contributions to Hungarian music. As a soloist he has played with many orchestras including the Symphonic Orchestra of the Hungarian Radio conducted by Zoltán Kocsis, the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra conducted by János Rolla and the UMZE Chamber Orchestra conducted by Péter Eötvös. He was also a member of chamber groups, for example, The Keller Quartet, Trio Art Nouveau and The Pestalozzi Trio.


György has been a member of contemporary ensembles such as UMZE, Intermoduláció and Componensemble. He has premiered and personally commissioned many new works. In 2009 he was appointed Deputy Head of the String Department and Head of the Cello, Double Bass and Viola Departments at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. Many of his students have won prestigious prizes and achieved success as soloists.


In 2020 he was appointed Senior Lecturer at the prestigious Queensland Conservatorium Griffith
University. In 2021 he established a piano-cello duo with colleague, Roger Cui.

Margaret Blades

Violinist Margaret Blades has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral leader nationally and internationally throughout her distinguished career. As a soloist, she has performed on several occasions with the Adelaide, WA and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, the Auckland Philharmonia, Fremantle Chamber Orchestra and Adelaide Chamber Orchestra. She has premiered new works for solo violin and orchestra by esteemed Australian composers Ross Edwards, Richard Mills and James Ledger, and has appeared alongside superstar Nigel Kennedy in Vivaldi Concerto for 2 violins. Highlights of her career include playing Concertmaster for the Australian premiere of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, conducted by Sir Jeffrey Tate, and performing with orchestras including the Australian Chamber Orchestrra, Sydney Symphony and Australian World Orchestra in some of the worlds most prestigious concert halls including Musikverein (Vienna) , Concertgebouw (Amsterdam)  Wigmore Hall and Royal Albert Hall (London). She has held the Associate Concertmaster position with both the Adelaide and West Australian Symphony Orchestras.


Since 2017 Margaret has been Guest Leader of the Gold Coast Chamber Orchestra, and recently performed with QSO in Wagner’s Ring Cycle for Opera Australia.
Margaret has taught violin at the University of WA, has been on the faculty of Elder Conservatorium (Adelaide), the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music and the WAAPA. She has tutored and directed at Australian Youth Orchestra programmes, and has built up a strong violin pedagogy practice in her private studio.


She has broadcast many recitals for ABC Classic FM, and played in chamber music recitals at the Adelaide and Perth International Arts Festivals.

Jack Bolton

Bass Jack Bolton recently completed a Bachelor of Music (Classical Voice Performance) at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, studying with Margaret Schindler.

 

During his studies, performance highlights included roles in staged productions of Philip Glass’ Orphée (Judge), Iolanthe (Private Willis) and Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Snug). He also won the Queensland Conservatorium’s Margaret Nickson Prize in 2021, and was a prize winner at the 2023 National Liederfest.


In 2022 Jack joined Brisbane’s Voxalis Opera, performing the role of Masetto in scenes from Mozart’s Don Giovanni in the company’s season finale, A Celebration of Opera, followed in 2023 by the roles of Giorgio Talbot and Sir Gualtiero Raleigh in The Two Queens, a staging of scenes from Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux.


Earlier this year, Jack was accepted into the Melba Opera Trust and is supported by the John & Elizabeth Wright-Smith Scholarship and the Annie McFarling Opera Scholarship.
